Are You Ready For The Grand Challenge?

Despite the MCO imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Grand STEM Challenge (GSC) was successfully conducted in 2020 and 2021 with overwhelming participation from more than 35 schools each year.

Although the competitions under the GSC were originally planned as face-to-face events, they had to be conducted online by our STEM centres, Tech Dome Penang & Penang Math Platform. Judging by the keen interest shown by participants, the events were indeed truly well-received.

For this year’s GSC, the Organising Committee has decided to offer 8 competition categories for participants to select from, namely:

  1. Physics
  2. Chemistry
  3. Biology
  4. HOTS Math
  5. Robotics
  6. Game Development
  7. Mobile App Development
  8. LevelUP Your English

GSC is an inter-team competition open to lower secondary students and interested students will need to register through their respective schools. To facilitate opportunities for wider participation for more students, each participant may only participate in 1 category.

The workshops and preliminary competition will be conducted virtually but, in anticipation of easing of Covid restrictions and to instil more excitement to the competition, the Organisers are planning for the Grand Final to be conducted in person, subject to the prevailing Covid situation then.

Individual trophies, prizes and certificates will be offered for the top 3 teams in each category and medallions and certificates for the top 20 team finalists for each category.

Individual team scores for the 8 categories achieved by the respective teams will be accumulated to derive at the best overall school which will receive the Penang STEM – Intel Challenge Trophy.

Chung Ling Private emerged as the best overall team in 2020 whilst SMK St Xavier stole the accolades in 2021.

To help prepare students for the respective competitions, the Organisers have planned for the following:

  1. Educational/Preparatory Workshops (Jun/Jul 2022)
  2. Preliminary Competition (Aug 2022)
  3. Grand STEM Challenge (Sep 2022)

As the GSC is also meant to be a platform to provide learning options in relevant STEM subjects to students, it will also be open to those who may wish to only join workshops (June & July) but not participate in the competitions.

Although there will be no entrance fee charge for government-aided schools, the Organisers will need to reach out for corporate sponsorship to defray organisational and facilitators’ cost. Hence, there will be limits on the number of students to be registered per school. Schools are, therefore, urged to register their interest early and confirmation of their participation will only be made after sponsorship confirmation. More details can be obtained from corporate@penangstem.com.

So, if you are a lower secondary student and would like to take the opportunity to either enhance your STEM knowledge or would like to assess your knowledge or proficiency against students from other schools, check out our Grand STEM Challenge.

Or, if you are a parent, all the more reasons to encourage your child to indulge in useful STEM online learning which will be specially structured to ensure that this will help to make up for what they might have missed out during their lapses in attending school due to the MCO.

Grand Finale for GSC ’21!

It was prizes galore when PENANG STEM, PENANG MATH PLATFORM & TECH DOME PENANG held a joint prize-giving ceremony for the Grand STEM Challenge ’21 (GSC ’21) and Robomania ’21.

The Grand STEM Challenge is an annual inter-school team competition for lower secondary students in 7 categories, i.e. Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Robotics, Game Design, Mathematics & English. Workshops and competitions were conducted by Tech Dome Penang and Penang Math Platform.

Although GSC was initially planned as an in-person competition, it had to be conducted virtually in view of the prevailing Covid ’19 situation. Despite this, the competition still attracted very encouraging participation from schools and standards were very high, clearly reflecting that GSC ’21 had achieved the objective to help ensure that participating students are not deprived of the opportunity to enhance their STEM-learning.

A total of 1, 251 participants (forming 417 teams of 3) took part in the preliminary rounds and twenty teams from each category qualified for the Grand Challenge which was held on Sep 11.

Participating students went through preparatory workshops and 2 monthly challenges.

Penang Chief Minister, YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow was treated to a special drone aerial display welcome before the prize-giving.

Congratulations to SMK St Xavier for coming out as the overall champion to snatch the GSC Challenge Trophy which was sponsored by Intel Technology.

Our sincere gratitude goes out to Penang Chief Minister, YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow for gracing the function and for sponsoring participating schools in his constituency and Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Pulau Pinang for endorsing the event.

Our appreciation also to Intel Technology for coming forward to be the Main Sponsor for the event for the second year running and also Emico Penang for sponsoring the other trophies and medallions for the finalists, State Exco YB Abdul Halim Hussain, YB Chong Eng, Kiwanis Penang Central and Intel Technology for sponsoring schools to participate.

Syabas also to all participating students – you are all truly winners in your own right!

Back in 2020 when Covid-19 hit our shores and the first MCO had to be imposed to ensure the safety of every one of us, many parents were very much concerned about how it would impact their children’s education.

Being a first in our lifetime, it was undeniable that the government and the various authorities were truly groping in the dark on how to face the harrowing situation and to cushion the negative impact in any way possible.

At PENANG STEM, we were equally concerned about how we could continue to play an effective role in complementing the mainstream education system to provide interesting and fun STEM-learning to students. The challenge then was to migrate to online learning and still ensure interesting learning opportunities for the students.

As students at secondary level were, and will continue to be, the natural pipeline to meet the future human resource needs of our nation, we took on the challenge to move online and kicked off our 4-month STEM Learning From Home (SLFH) monthly series from August till November.

This offered students at lower secondary level the opportunity to participate in online STEM workshops covering 7 categories (namely Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Robotics, IT, Mathematics and English).

To make the series even more interesting, Monthly Challenges were included to allow participating students to excel and scores were accumulated leading to a Grand STEM Challenge which was conducted in December with trophies and prizes thrown in for winners of the individual categories.

As it was meant to be an annual inter-school competition, a Challenge Trophy was donated by Intel to the school (which happened to be Chung Ling Private) with the highest accumulated scores from all the 7 categories.

With the endorsement of the Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Pulau Pinang, Participation and Merit Certificates were issued to participants in the Monthly Challenges and qualifiers for the Grand Challenge which carried co-curricular points and this helped to draw tremendous response with almost 2,000 students from 39 schools taking part in the 4-month series and the Grand Challenge.

Well, it’s almost 15 months since the first onslaught of the Covid-19 epidemic on our shores and, with the latest data, it would appear that the problem will linger for a while.

If you are a lower secondary student, why not take the opportunity, whilst you are stuck at home and deprived of learning opportunities, to take part in this year’s Grand STEM Challenge which will be back with monthly Workshops and Challenges in July and August, leading to the finale on Sep 10. 7 categories (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Robotics, Games Design, Mathematics and English) will again be offered.

Or, if you are a parent, all the more reasons to encourage your child to indulge in useful STEM online learning which will be specially structured to ensure that this will make up for what they might, or would have, missed out during their lapses in attending school.

However, do take note that the Grand STEM Challenge is an inter-school team event and interested students should register through their respective schools. More information can be obtained through email at enquiry@penangstem.com

GRAND STEM CHALLENGE 2020

Exciting Finale to a 4-month Challenge

PENANG STEM and its 2 STEM Centres (namely Tech Dome Penang and Penang Math Platform) embarked on a 4-month STEM Learning From Home online series from August to November, 2020.

The primary objective of the programme was to help ensure that students would have the opportunity to indulge in STEM-learning the fun way whilst away from school. 7 subject categories were offered to lower secondary students (namely Physics, Chemistry, Biology, IT, Robotics, English & Mathematics). In order to make the programme more interesting and to encourage keener participation from students, it was decided to include Monthly Challenges for participants to accumulate scores which would lead up to a Grand STEM Challenge on Dec 19 for which trophies and cash prizes would be awarded to winners for the 7 categories. In addition, a Challenge Trophy would be given out to Best Overall School. A total of nearly 2,000 students from 35 schools in Penang participated in the 4-month programme when more than 60 online workshops were conducted. From the accumulated scores over the 4 months, 420 participants (60 from each of the subject categories) qualified for the Grand STEM Challenge. Participants were then grouped into teams of 3 under their respective schools for a grand challenge. SM Chung Ling (P) emerged as the Best Overall School and were the inaugural winners of the PENANG STEM – INTEL Grand STEM Challenge Trophy. Winners of the respective categories also received trophies (sponsored by EMICO) and cash prizes (sponsored by INTEL). The STEM Learning From Home series and the Grand STEM Challenge were endorsed by the Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Pulau Pinang and participating students received participation certificates with co-curriculum points. Participation fees were sponsored by the Founding Sponsors of the StepUP Initiative (namely Flextronics Technology, Inari Technology, MI Technovation, Pentamaster, Greatech Technology, VAT Manufacturing, Analog Devices, Motorola Solutions, Globetronics Technology, Micron Memory, Bagan Specialists Centre). Kiwanis Penang Central and some state elected reps (YB Dato’ Abdul Halim, YB Chong Eng, YB Soon Lip Chee, YB Satees Muniandy & YB Chris Lee) also sponsored students from their respective constituencies.
